Aerial Bundle Cable, commonly known as Aerial Bundled Conductor or ABC cable, are utilized in overhead power line systems, where they amalgamate several individual core cables into one consolidated unit.
Characteristics and applications of ABC Cable
- Aerial Bundle Cables (ABC) serve various purposes, including temporary power distribution for street lighting and secondary pole-to-pole service cables.
- These cables consist of lightweight stranded aluminum conductors, available in both single-core and multi-core configurations.
- While they find application in rural power distribution in some regions, their primary usage is in temporary power setups like construction sites.
Unlike bare conductors, ABC cables are insulated, making them preferable due to the reduced risk of sparks and shorts, particularly in dry climates prone to bushfires. - The use of XLPE insulation material, along with relevant sheathing material, enables tight bundling of ABC cables.
- Additionally, they can incorporate additional steel wire supports, akin to those found in ACSR, known as catenary wires, to enhance stability.
